Saint Matthew is the Evangelist who points to Jesus as the True Man, therefore he is shown as a man with wings.

The color of the shield is blood-red and the color of the man and his wings is gold.

St. Matthew’s day is September 21.

Praise, Lord, for him whose Gospel your human life declared,
Who, wordly gain forsaking, your path of suff’ring shared.
From all unrighteous mammon, Oh, raise our eyes anew
That we, whate’er our station, may rise and follow you.

Saint Mark The Evangelist

Saint Mark The Evangelist

Saint Mark emphasizes the power and the miracles of the Saviour.

The lion, as the king of beasts, is used as the symbol of strength.

The color of the shield is red and the lion is gold.

St. Mark’s day is April 25.

For him, O Lord, we praise you, whose fainting heart, made strong,
Poured forth his faithful Gospel to animate our song.
May we in all our weakness receive your power divine
And all as faithful branches grow strong in you, the vine.

Saint Andrew

Saint Andrew

Saint Andrew is said to have died on a cross shaped like an “X”.

Since the date of the first Sunday in Advent is always the Sunday nearest to St. Andrew’s Day (November 30), this cross has become the emblem of the beginning of the Church Year.

The cross in silver on a blue shield has become the national cross of Scotland.

The day of St. Andrew is November 30.

All praise, O Lord, for Andrew, the first to welcome you,
Whose witness to his brother named you Messiah true.
May we, with hearts kept open to you throughout the year,
Confess to friend and neighbor your advent ever near.

Saint John The Apostle

Saint John The Apostle

This emblem is assigned to Saint John because an attempt was made on his life through poison put into the communion cup.

Showing the serpent arising out of the chalice was the only way in which they could make you think of poison in the wine.

The color shows the shield blue, the chalice silver, and the serpent red.

St. John’s day is December 27.

For your beloved disciple exiled to Patmos’ shore,
And for his faithful record, we praise you evermore.
Praise for the mystic vision his words to us unfold.
Instill in us his longing your glory to behold.

Saint PeterSaint Peter

The crossed keys are ususally assigned to Saint Peter because of the word of the Lord to him as recorded in Matthew 16:19 – “I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

The colors show the shield blue and the keys gold.

St. Peter’s day is June 29.

Praise for your great apostle so eager and so bold,Thrice falling, yet repentant, thrice charged to feed your fold.Lord, make your pastors faithful to guard your flock from harm,And hold them when they waver with your almighty arm.

Saint James – MinorSaint James - Minor

The saw is the symbol of Saint James – Minor. It is said that Saint James was thrown from the pinnacle of the temple, and then his body was sawed to pieces.

The day of St. James – Minor is May 1.

We praise your name for Philip, blest guide to Greek and Jew,
And for young James the faithful, who heard and followed you.
Oh, grant us grace to know you, the way, the truth, the life,
And wrestle with temptation till victors in the strife.

Saint JudeSaint Jude

Saint Jude (not to be confused with Judas Iscariot) also bears the name of Thaddeus or Lebbaeus.

The ship is the sign of the mission voyages he made for Christ.

The color of the shield is red, the ship is gold, and the sails are silver.

The day of St. Jude is October 28.

Praise, Lord, for your apostles who sealed their faith today;
One love, one hope impelled them to tread the sacred way.

 Saint SimonSaint Simon

Saint Simon is also known as the “Zealot” because he evidently belonged to this group within Israel at the time of Christ.

His emblem is shown with a fish on a book to emphasize that he was a fisher of men through the Gospel.

The colors for Saint Simon are a red shield, a silver fish, and a buff book trimmed in gold.

St. Simon’s day is October 28.

May we with zeal as earnest, the faith of Christ maintain,
And, foll’wing these our brothers, at length your rest attain.

 Saint JamesSaint James

Saint James is said to have traveled a great deal in order to preach the Gospel to many people.

The shell is a symbol for the traveler because he used it to scoop water to drink on his travels.

The colors show the shield blue and the shells gold.

The day of Saint James is July 25.

For him, O Lord, we praise you, who fell to Herod’s sword.
He drank your cup of suff’ring and thus fulfilled your word.
Lord, curb our vain impatience for glory and for gain,
And nerve us for such suff’rings as glorify your name.

 Saint ThomasSaint Thomas

Saint Thomas was evidently a twin because in John 11:16 he is called “Didymus”.

Saint Thomas was apparently the first missionary in India. There he built a church with his own hands. This is symbolized by the carpenter’s square. He was finally slain by the spear of a heathen priest; therefore the spear is used in his emblem also.

The day of St. Thomas is December 21.

All praise for your apostle whose short-lived doubtings prove
Your perfect twofold nature and all your depth of love.
We who await your coming desire your peace, O Lord;
Grant us true faith to know you, made flesh, yet God and Lord.

 Saint PhilipSaint Philip

The cross and the two loaves are assigned to Saint Philip because of the part he had in the feeding of the five thousand as recorded in John 6:1-14.

The color of the shield is red and the cross and the loaves are gold.

Saint Philip’s day is May 1.

We praise your name for Philip, blest guide to Greek and Jew,
And for young James the faithful, who heard and followed you.
Oh, grant us grace to know you, the way, the truth, the life,
And wrestle with temptation till victors in the strife.

 Saint BartholomewSaint Bartholomew

Saint Bartholomew died by being skinned alive. He was tortured to death for the Gospel.

His symbol shows his faithfulness to the Word, even while the knife reminds us of his terrible tortures.

The colors of this emblem are a red shield, a silver knife with a gold handle, and a golden book.

Saint Bartholomew’s day is August 24.

All praise for him whose candor through all his doubt you saw,
When Philip at the fig tree disclosed you in the law.
Discern, beneath our surface, O Lord, what we can be,
That by your truth made guileless, your glory we may see.

Saint PaulSaint Paul

Saint Paul has the sword assigned to him because he was a persecutor of the Church. The book is a symbol of his conversion to the greatest preacher of the Church.

The great change in Saint Paul shows itself in this: that he afterward speaks of the Word of God as the Sword of the Spirit.  (Ephesians 6:17)

The shield is red; the book is white; the letters are red, and the sword is gold.

Saint Paul’s day is January 25.

All praise for light from heaven and for the voice of awe,
All praise for glorious versions the persecutor saw.
O Lord, for Paul’s conversion we bless your name today;
Come, lighten all our darkness, and guide us on our way.

 Saint MatthiasSaint Matthias

The symbol of Saint Matthias is a pair of dice because the other disciples cast lots to decide who would take the place of Judas Iscariot.  (Acts 1:15-26)

The only time he is mentioned in the Bible is in the New Testament at the time of his selection.

The color of his shield is red and the dice are white and black.

The day of Saint Matthias is February 24.

Lord, your abiding presence mysterious made the choice;
For one in place of Judas the faithful now rejoice.
From all such false apostles your holy Church defend,
And by your parting promise be with us to the end.

Saint Matthew The ApostleSaint Matthew The Apostle

Because Saint Matthew was a tax collector when Jesus called him he has the three money bags assigned as his symbol.

The color of his shield is white, the border is red, and the bags are blue.

Saint Matthew’s day is September 21.

Praise, Lord, for him whose Gospel your human life declared,
Who, wordly gain forsaking, your path of suff’ring shared.
From all unrightous mammon, Oh, raise our eyes anew
That we, whate’er our station, may rise and follow you.

Judas IscariotJudas Iscariot

The symbols for Judas remind us of his final tragic choices; to betray his Lord and Savior for thirty pieces of silver  (Matthew 26:14-16), and to take his own life  (Matthew 27:3-5).

His name and the shield are black, the color of death; the noose is gold, and the coins are silver.

Saint Luke The EvangelistSaint Luke The Evangelist

The symbol of Saint Luke is the winged ox. Saint Luke emphasizes the sacrifice and the atonement of the Savior. He also stresses Jesus’ compassion for the lowly and outcast.

The biggest sacrifice was the ox. Here he is given wings to show that this was a heavenly sacrifice.

As is usual with the Evangelists, the shield is red and the ox is gold.

St. Luke’s day is October 18.

For that beloved physician all praise, whose Gospel shows,
The healer of the nations, the one who shares our woes.
Your wine and oil, O Savior, upon our spirits pour,
And with true balm of Gilead anoint us evermore.

Saint John The EvangelistSaint John The Evangelist

Saint John has the eagle for his symbol.

He reaches greater heights of revelation about the the divine nature and glory of Jesus than any of the other Evangelists.

The color of the shield is red and the eagle is gold.

St. John’s day is December 27.

For your beloved disciple exiled to Patmos’ shore,
And for his faithful record, we praise you evermore.
Praise for the mystic vision his words to us unfold.
Instill in us his longing your glory to behold.
